Eight Devotional Verses in Praise of Goddess Durga
Verse 1
Jaya jaya jaya mahiṣāsuramardini
Ramyakapardini śailasute
Jaya jaya jaya surasamaramardini
Namaḥ suravarṇe namaste
Meaning: Victory, victory, victory to the slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful matted locks, daughter of the mountain! Victory, victory, victory to the destroyer in the battle of the gods! Salutations to the giver of divine color, salutations to you!
Verse 2
Ayi girinandini nanditamedini
Dadhati madalasita-locane
Girivarakalpalaṭāsurasakhini
Jaya jaya he jagadambike
Meaning: O daughter of the mountains who brings joy to the earth! You with intoxicated, languid eyes! O you like the wish-fulfilling vine of the great mountain! Victory, victory to you, O Mother of the Universe!
Verse 3
Suravara bṛndavandita-pāde
Dadhati karavāla-kheṭaka-dhāre
Bhava bhava bhava sindhuśoṣiṇi
Jaya jaya bharjini mahiṣe
Meaning: O whose feet are worshipped by the multitudes of gods! Bearing in your hands a sword and shield! You who dry up the ocean of worldly existence! Victory, victory to the destroyer of the buffalo demon!
Verse 4
Ayi raṇadurmaḍa śatruvadhodita
Durdharanirjara śaktibhṛte
Caturavicāra dhurīṇamahāśiva
Dūtī kṛta pramathādhipate
Meaning: O you who arose mightily for the destruction of arrogant enemies in battle! Bearing the irresistible, invincible power! O great Shiva’s messenger, lord of the Pramathas — you who made the great Mahashiva’s purpose your own!
Verse 5
Dadhati divyavimānavarālaye
Jaya jaya dundubhidaityabhaye
Mama sukhadāṃ madudaravilāsini
Mama sukhatāṃ kuru devi vare
Meaning: O you who reside in the most excellent celestial abode! Victory, victory — at whose kettle-drum the demons tremble with fear! O playful one with a gracious heart who gives me happiness — O divine Goddess, grant me joy!
Verse 6
Tava vimalendukulaṃ vadanendumaṃ
sakalaṃ nanu kūlayate
Kimu puruhūta purindumukhaṃ tadalaṃ
Tvayi me manasaścarate
Meaning: The beauty of your pure, moon-like face brings fulfillment to all! What can Indra’s face (renowned for its beauty) compare to yours? My mind wanders only in you.
Verse 7
Ayi madhukaīṭabha-dāriṇi dāriṇi
Nirgalite nigalatyapi
Bhujapaṭalaṃ bhava daityapatākinī
Jaya jaya jaya śubhalakṣaṇe
Meaning: O you who tore asunder the demons Madhu and Kaitabha! Though the chain of worldly existence falls away — you who are the banner of victory over demons! Victory, victory, victory to the one of auspicious marks!
Verse 8 (Concluding)
Sakalavilāsa kalānilayakrama
Kelicalat-kanakāṃgade
Arikalabhaṃ karavālakaraṃ parihṛtya
Jaya jaya devi namostute
Meaning: O the progressive foundation of all beauty and all arts! Playfully moving with golden armlets! Whose sword-bearing hand keeps all enemies at bay! Victory, victory to the Goddess — salutations to you!
The Significance of Ashtakam Worship
An Ashtakam (eight verses) creates a complete octave of praise — like the eight notes of the musical scale completing one cycle of creation. Worshipping the Goddess through these eight dimensions of praise creates a complete resonance between the devotee’s consciousness and the divine feminine.
The eight verses of the Durga Ashtakam correspond to the eight directions and the eight forms of the Goddess — ensuring that protection comes from all sides and that all aspects of the devotee’s life are encompassed in the Goddess’s grace.
Phala Shruti
Durgāṣṭakaṃ paṭhennityaṃ prātar madhyāhne sāyane
Sarvakāmān prāpnoti, mokṣaṃ ca prāpnuyāt dhruvaṃ
“Whoever reads the Durga Ashtakam daily — morning, noon, and evening — attains all desires and certainly attains liberation.”
