The Durga Beeja Mantra (Seed Mantra)
Om Dum Durgāyai Namaḥ

The Navarna Mantra (Nine-syllable Mantra)
Om Aiṃ Hrīṃ Klīṃ Cāmuṇḍāyai Vicce
Meaning: This supreme nine-syllable mantra invokes the three powers of Goddess Durga simultaneously — Mahakali (Aim), Mahalakshmi (Hrim), and Mahasaraswati (Klim) — and is chanted for the complete victory of righteousness over evil.
Durga Devi Mantra for Protection
Sarvamaṅgala māṅgalye śive sarvārtha sādhike
Śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo’stute
Meaning: O Devi, who bestows all auspiciousness and is herself the most auspicious of all! O Shiva, who fulfils all objectives! O threefold refuge, O Gauri, O Narayani — I bow to you in reverence!
The Meaning of “Durga”
The name Durgā comes from the Sanskrit roots:
- Dur = difficult, inaccessible
- Ga = to go
Thus Durga literally means: She who is difficult to approach; She who is beyond the ordinary; She who removes all that is difficult and impossible.
The name also refers to a great demon named Durg whom the Goddess slew — becoming Durgā, the conqueror of Durg.
In the Durga Saptashati (also called Devi Mahatmya), the Goddess declares: “Since I have come to this land to slay the demon Durga, I shall henceforth be known as Durga in this world.”
Origin & Significance
Goddess Durga is the supreme manifestation of divine feminine power (Shakti). When the demon kings Mahishasura, Shumbha, and Nishumbha became so powerful that they overthrew the gods from heaven, all the male deities pooled their divine energies (tejas) to create the all-powerful Durga — a goddess who combined within her the force of all cosmic powers.
Her iconography reveals her nature:
- Eight or ten arms — mastery over all directions and dimensions
- Lion vehicle — courage, power, and will
- Weapons in each hand — gifts from different gods; the full arsenal of divine protection
- Radiant, golden form — the purity and fire of divine consciousness
The Nine Manifestations (Navadurga)
During Navratri, devotees worship nine forms of the Goddess over nine nights:
| Day | Form | Quality |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shailputri | Foundation and nature |
| 2 | Brahmacharini | Austerity and devotion |
| 3 | Chandraghanta | Courage and grace |
| 4 | Kushmanda | Creation and energy |
| 5 | Skandamata | Motherly love |
| 6 | Katyayani | Fierce warrior energy |
| 7 | Kalaratri | Destroyer of darkness |
| 8 | Mahagauri | Purity and serenity |
| 9 | Siddhidatri | Giver of all powers |

“To the Devi who pervades all beings as pure energy and power — salutations, salutations, salutations to her again and again!”
