Step 1: Preparation (Shuddhikaran)

Purify yourself:

  • Bathe before puja
  • Wear clean, preferably freshly washed clothes (yellow or white is ideal)
  • Sit facing east or north

Purify the puja space:

  • Clean the area thoroughly
  • Sprinkle Gangajal (holy water) over the puja area
  • Say: “Om Apavitrah Pavitro Va” — “Whether pure or impure, whoever remembers Lord Vishnu becomes completely pure”

Step 2: Sankalpa (Resolution)

Place your right hand on your heart and state your intention:

“Om tatsad adya [date], [your name], performing this Ganesh puja for [state your purpose — well-being, success, removing obstacles, etc.]”

This is not merely formality — it is the act of making your intention conscious and offering it to the divine. The Sankalpa transforms a routine activity into a sacred act.

Step 3: Installation of the Idol (Prana Pratishtha for Special Occasions)

For daily puja, simply welcome the Ganesh murti that is already on your altar. For Ganesh Chaturthi, the following installation is performed:

Place the idol on the red cloth. Sprinkle Panchamrit over it while chanting:

Om Gaṇeśāya namaḥ — Śrī Gaṇeśamūrtaye prāṇapratiṣṭhāṃ karomi

“Om, salutations to Lord Ganesha — I am establishing the presence of divine consciousness in this form of Lord Ganesha.”
