॥ Aditya Hridayam ॥
The Heart of the Sun — taught by sage Agastya to Lord Rama on the battlefield of Lanka
(From Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 107)
The Setting
Before the final battle between Lord Rama and the demon king Ravana, Rama stood tired and overwhelmed on the battlefield. The sage Agastya descended from the heavens, approached Rama, and said: “O Raghava, listen to this eternal secret — Aditya Hridayam — the Heart of the Sun. Chant it now, and victory shall be yours.”
Verses 1–5: Introduction
Tato yuddhapariśrāntaṃ samare cintayā sthitam
Rāvaṇaṃ cāgrato dṛṣṭvā yuddhāya samupasthitam
Meaning: Then, seeing Rama exhausted from battle, lost in thought, standing before Ravana who was ready to fight again — the divine sage Agastya, who had arrived with all the gods to witness the battle, approached Rama and spoke these words:
Ādityahṛdayaṃ puṇyaṃ sarvaśatruvināśanam
Jayāvahaṃ japennityaṃ akṣayaṃ paramaṃ śivam
Meaning: This Aditya Hridayam is supremely sacred. It destroys all enemies. It bestows victory and is eternally auspicious. One who chants it regularly achieves all success.
Verses 6–15: The Praise of the Sun
Sarvadevātmako hyeṣa tejasvī raśmibhāvanaḥ
Eṣa devāsuragaṇān lokān pāti gabhastibhiḥ
Meaning: The Sun God embodies all deities within himself. He is the radiant one who nourishes all things through his rays. With his light, he protects all the worlds — the gods, demons, and all beings alike.
Eṣa brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivaḥ skandaḥ prajāpatiḥ
Mahendro dhanadaḥ kālo yamaḥ somo hyapāṃ patiḥ
Meaning: He is Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda (Kartikeya), and Prajapati (Lord of all creatures). He is Mahendra (Indra), Dhanada (Kubera), Kala (Time), Yama (the lord of death), Soma (Moon), and the Lord of waters (Varuna).
Ādityaḥ savitā sūryaḥ khagaḥ pūṣā gabhastimān
Suvarṇasadṛśo bhānurhiraṇyaretā divākaraḥ
Meaning: Aditya (son of Aditi), Savita (the life-giving one), Surya (the solar deity), Khaga (one who moves through the sky), Pusha (the nourisher), Gabhastiman (filled with rays), Suvarnasadrisha (golden-hued), Bhanu (the luminous one), Hiranyareta (the golden-seeded one), Divakara (maker of the day) — these are his sacred names.
Verses 16–21: The Complete Name-Litany
The Sun bears twelve forms corresponding to the twelve months, each with its own name and cosmic function:
| Name | Cosmic Function |
|---|---|
| Aditya | The cosmic sustainer, son of Aditi |
| Savita | Giver of life-force and vitality |
| Surya | The supreme solar deity |
| Arka | One who is worshipped and glorified |
| Pusha | The cosmic nourisher of all life |
| Ravi | The cause of rain through evaporation |
| Gabhastiman | Bearer of divine rays |
| Bhanu | The supremely luminous one |
| Khaga | The sky-traveller |

Verses 22–30: Devotion and Method
Tacchṛṇvan mahābāhurvīryavān ripunāśanaḥ
Rāghavaḥ prayato bhūtvā ādityam upāsta tadā
Meaning: Hearing these words, the mighty-armed Rama — destroyer of enemies — composed himself and worshipped the Sun God with full devotion, sprinkling sacred water.
Tatraiva ca mahātejā vijayāya samutthitaḥ
So’bhimukho rāvaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣo hyabhavat mahān
Meaning: Then the supremely radiant Rama rose up ready for victory. Facing Ravana, he felt a great surge of joy and confidence.
The Result: Victory
After chanting the Aditya Hridayam three times, Rama took up his bow, and in the battle that followed, he slew Ravana with the invincible Brahmastra weapon. The Aditya Hridayam is thus a hymn proven on the battlefield of the Ramayana itself.
