The Primary Hanuman Mantra

Om Hanumate Namaḥ

Meaning: Om — I bow to Lord Hanuman, the son of the Wind God.

The Hanuman Beeja Mantra

Om Aim Bhrim Hanumate
Rāmadūtāya Namaḥ

Meaning: Om — to the great emissary of Lord Rama, the mighty Hanuman — I bow!

The Panchamukhi Hanuman Mantra (Five-Faced Hanuman)

Om Śrī Pañcamukha Hanumate Namaḥ

Meaning: Salutations to the five-faced Lord Hanuman — embodying the powers of Hanuman (east), Narasimha (south), Garuda (west), Varaha (north), and Hayagriva (sky).

Bajrang Baan Opening Mantra

Niścaya prema pratīti te, vinaya karen sanamāna
Tehi ke kāraja sakala śubha, siddha karen Hanumāna

Meaning: For one who approaches with sincere love, faith, and humility, Hanuman fulfills all their auspicious purposes.

The Meaning of “Hanuman”

The name Hanumān has several origins:

Etymology Meaning
Hanu + Man One whose chin (hanu) was struck by Indra’s thunderbolt
Hanumat He who possesses great inner strength in his jaw
Han + Uma He who has destroyed (han) ignorance through Uma (Parvati’s grace)

Other sacred names include: Anjaneya (son of Anjana), Pavan Putra (son of the Wind), Maruti (born of Marut-wind), Kesari Nandan (son of Kesari), Bajrang Bali (strong as a thunderbolt).

Origin & Significance

Lord Hanuman is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped deities in all of India. He is an avatar of Lord Shiva — specifically the eleventh Rudra — who took birth to serve Lord Rama and demonstrate the path of pure devotion (bhakti).

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman is described as the embodiment of:

  • Jnana (knowledge) — the wisest of the wise
  • Bhakti (devotion) — the purest devotee
  • Shakti (power) — capable of moving mountains
  • Vairagya (detachment) — free from all personal desire

His single-pointed devotion to Lord Rama is considered the ideal model of selfless service (seva) in the Hindu tradition.

When to Chant Hanuman Mantra

  • Tuesday and Saturday — most auspicious days for Hanuman worship
  • At dawn — facing east as the sun rises
  • Before challenges — examinations, job interviews, sports competitions, surgery
  • When fearful — the mantra instantly creates a shield of divine protection
  • Hanuman Jayanti — the birthday of Lord Hanuman (Chaitra Purnima)

Method of Chanting

Best time: Tuesday and Saturday at sunrise or sunset
Mala: Red coral mala or rudraksha mala
Repetitions: 108 times; for serious purposes, chant Hanuman Chalisa 7 times before the mantra
Offerings: Red flowers (especially red lotus), sindoor (vermillion), sesame oil lamp, bananas, betel leaves
Posture: Standing or seated; facing east

Practice for courage: Before any frightening situation, close your eyes, place your right hand on your heart, and chant Om Hanumate Namah 21 times. Feel Hanuman’s strength flowing into your own heart.

Hanuman’s Connection to the Kali Yuga

The scriptures teach that in the current age (Kali Yuga), Lord Hanuman is one of the seven immortals (Chiranjeevi) who remains present on earth to assist sincere devotees. Unlike the distant celestial realm of Lord Vishnu or the inaccessible heights of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is said to be present wherever the Ramayana is sung.

The Ananda Ramayana records that Hanuman himself said: “I will reside in this world as long as the name of Rama is chanted, and I will always be present to protect those who worship Rama.”

Phala Shruti

From the Hanuman Chalisa by Tulsidas:

Jo yeh padhe Hanuman Chalisa
Hoye siddhi sakhi Gaureesa

“Whoever reads this Hanuman prayer — Gauri’s lord (Shiva himself) is the witness that all their purposes shall be fulfilled.”

Pavan tanay sankat haran, mangal murati roop
Ram Lakhan Sita sahit, hriday basahu sur bhoop

“O son of the Wind God, destroyer of all distress, embodiment of all auspiciousness — dwell in my heart together with Ram, Lakshman, and Sita!”
